What Are E-liquids?
E-liquid (aka vape juice or vape liquid) is the fluid inside refillable vapes that creates the vapour. Every e-liquid has a base of propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG), mixed with flavour and nicotine (optional).
There are three main types:
- Freebase e-liquid: This is the traditional form of nicotine used in vape liquids. It delivers a stronger throat hit and is usually available in 10ml bottles with varying nicotine strengths (usually 3mg, 6mg, 12mg, or 18mg).
- Nicotine salts: Manufactured for smoother absorption, nicotine salts are popular for those trying to enjoy the feel of smoking. These work well in pod systems and MTL kits and come in 10ml bottles, usually in 10mg or 20mg strengths.
- Shortfills: These are larger bottles (50ml or 100ml) with 0mg nicotine but room to add a nicotine shot.

The Ideal VG/PG Balance
VG/PG ratios also play a role. Higher VG (like 70/30) is thicker and works best with sub-ohm coils, while 50/50 ratios suit starter kits and pod systems. The right balance depends on your kit, coil resistance, and how you like to vape. Keep these points in mind when choosing an e-liquid for your kit:
- For high-resistance coils (0.6 ohms onwards), always use low VG e-liquids.
- For low-resistance coils (like 0.15, 0.5, etc.), choose high-VG fluids.
- Nic shot is only made for shortfills and should not be vaped separately.
- Never mix nic shots in freebase or nicotine salts.
